TEXAS SHOOTOUT (11-16-01) TO FEATURE
SOME GREAT BOUTS

The upcoming Texas Shootout featuring Ann Wolfe versus Gina Nicholas in the main event is adding up to be a truly great fight card, perhaps the best ever in female boxing.

Ann WolfeNo doubt, Wolfe Vs. Nicholas will be a “barn-burner”! Wolfe has distinguished herself as one of the top female boxers today. Always in top condition, she is a boxer-puncher to be reckoned with. Her quick hands and heavy punching power has landed her a 9-1-0 record with six KO’s. She also had a no contest when she broke Christine Robinson’s nose and severely cut it after an accidental head butt in the first round in Kenner, LA.

Among her impressive KO’s Ann has sent to the canvas Mary Ann Almager (41 seconds of round one) and Diane Clark, both well regarded boxers. Ann also KO’d Gina Nicholas in April, 2000 in Kenner, LA. So, this bout is shaping up as not only a rematch, but also a chance for Nicholas to “set the record straight”.

Nicholas, possibly the most powerful female boxer in the business, says she underestimated Wolfe in her first fight, a mistake she says she won’t make again. Gina Nicholas

With a record of 11-4-2 and eight KO’s Nicholas does not lack ring experience. She has beaten the likes of Kendra Lenhart, Britt Van Buskirk, Karla Redo and Suzy Taylor.

There is no doubt Gina Nicholas will be stepping into the ring with a single purpose in mind, knock out Ann Wolfe! On the other hand soft-spoken Ann Wolfe is considered to be a boxing phenomenon. What will Ann do? Stick to the business at hand. With a 60% KO average Wolfe definitely steps into the ring with bad intentions and the power to back it up.

This should be a real fight! But, there are other great fights on the TEXAS SHOOTOUT card as well.

ANANI VS. GIBBS

Sumya AnaniSumya Anani is considered one of the best female boxers in the business and her record proves the point. With 18 wins, 1 loss and 7 KO’s (no draws) Sumya Anani certainly has a record to be envied by any female boxer today. Her performance in the ring gets better with each round. Sumya has the distinction of beating Christi Martin, a rare claim!

Her match with Fredia Gibbs should also produce real sparks. Fredia “the Cheetah” Gibbs has an 8-1-0 with 2 KO’s on her record. Although she has less experience than Anani, Gibbs is fast and strong with good boxing skills. Her only loss was to Leah Mellinger. Fredia Gibbs

Fredia will have to use all the skills and speed she can muster to beat Anani. And, perhaps more importantly, Gibbs will have to be superbly conditioned. Her last fight was in June, but before that she was inactive for almost two years. Nevertheless, Gibbs has proved to be a tough competitor that should not be taken lightly by any opponent.

ORTEGA VS VELEZ

The fight for the WIBA 122 lb. World Championship may be one of the more interesting fights on The TEXAS SHOOTOUT card. Undefeated Mary Ortega will face undefeated Mary Ortega Ada Velez in this match. Both are excellent boxers.

Mary Ortega has the edge on experience with a superlative record of 19-0-0 and 4 KO’s. While Mary lacks heavy-duty, knockout  power, about a 20% KO percentage, she more than makes up for it with non-stop action and well developed boxing skills. Ada Velez

On the other hand, Ada Velez, also undefeated, has less experience, but a much higher knock out percentage, 50%. Ada’s record stands at 8-0-0 with 4 KO’s. Ada also is an action fighter well prepared to go the distance if necessary.

Both fighters are in very good condition and both fight with a great deal of focus. This means this fight could very well go either way. Since neither has ever been stopped it is hard to tell if Ada Velez really does have superior punching power. Or, will Mary Ortega’s edge in ring experience offset this if she does?

Ortega is the larger woman, fighting at 125 or above five times. Velez has never fought above 121 with most of her fights being at 118-120 lbs. Nevertheless, this is a great match-up and either fighter could walk away with the belt. And, one thing is for sure; one of these women will face her first defeat on November 16, 2001. Both will fight hard to be sure that doesn’t happen to them.

HALLBACK VS BLAKENEY

Fighting for the WIBA 130 lb. World Championship will be Chevelle Hallback versus Snodene Blakeney. Hallback’s record of 5-3-0 with 4 KO’s is very deceptive for this world-class fighter.

Chevelle HallbackHer three losses are not in any sense ordinary. Chevelle, who had never boxed a day in her life, TKO’d Conny Ploessner in her pro debut at “147 lbs.” Her next fight was against Lucia Rijker where Chevelle was TKO’d by Lucia in the fifth round of a six round fight. Most observers felt she would have gone the distance with Rijker, but she simply ran out of gas. This was her second professional fight.

Hallback’s other two losses were by decision to Doris Hackl and Laura Serrano, both fights in which the fans thought she had won. Of her five wins, four are by KO or TKO, a 90% KO average.

Simply put, at 130 lbs. Chevelle Hallback is one of the best fighters in the world today.

That doesn’t mean Snodene Blakeney will be a cakewalk for Hallback. Blakeney has a record of 9-8-0 with 2 KO’s. She is very experienced in the ring and seems to have either “on” or  “off” nights.

Blakeney is no doubt a warrior. She has never been stopped by any fighter, including Marischa Sjauw, Laura Serrano and Isra Girgrah. There is no quit in Snodene Blakeney and she certainly has a chance against Hallback, but it will be up hill. Snodene is coming off a three fight losing streak so she is definitely ready for a win. Word has it she is training very hard for this fight

Conditioning could be a factor. If Snodene can withstand Hallback’s signature onslaught and very heavy punching power she could pull off an upset in this fight. Definitely look for this to be an action packed fight with both fighters being highly motivated.

MAHFOOD vs. ORTEGON

Valerie MahfoodThis may be one of the most important female fights on the card in terms of who will eventually fight Ali or Frazier in the Super Middle Weight division. Actually, Frazier and Ali fought at 160, in which case Ann Wolfe orTrina Oretgon Gina Nicholas could stand in their way.

Valerie Mahfood will be fighting Trina Ortegon for the WIBA Super Middleweight World Title on November 16th at the TEXS SHOOTOUT. Both women are very capable boxers among the best in the world. They are tough competitors with no quit in them. Mahfood is the only boxer ever to defeat Ann Wolfe with a third round KO in Houston, TX in November of 2000.

Normally fighting at light heavy weight Mahfood would seem to have the advantage. She has a lot of ring savvy and skill, but I wouldn’t make any bets on this one.

Despite Mahfood’s impressive record of 11-4-0 with 7 KO’s; a 63% KO average versus Trina Ortegon’s record of 9-4-0 with 2 KO’s Mahfood will be in a real battle on November 16th.  Mahfood was KO’d twice by Kendra Lenhart, but Trina Ortegon won a ten round decision over Lenhart.  Mahfood won a fifth round TKO over Mary Ann Almager while Trina lost twice to Almager, once by decision and once by TKO in the 9th round.

It would seem that Mahfood has the edge in power, but Trina appears to be the more capable boxer, a classic match-up! Trina has won over the likes of Suzy Taylor, Diane Clark and Marsha Valley, all well regarded boxers. Trina has gone ten rounds three times in contrast to Mahfood only once. Of course, Mahfood’s high KO percentage affects this number.

And so it goes. What does this tell us? Both of these women will come to fight. They are both very strong with comparable skills. Either of them could walk away with the WIBA Super Middleweight Title. This is a ten round match that will be well worth seeing.

and there's MORE TO COME!!
